The Gaza War enters its second year: Israel's international isolation and unprecedented diplomatic shifts

As the war on Gaza approaches its second year, governmental attitudes reveal an unusual landscape: Israel, which has long enjoyed political immunity and unwavering Western support, now faces public criticism, diplomatic sanctions, and even severed ties.

In the United States: Despite continued military support, recent polls show that 45 percent of Americans consider what is happening to be genocide, prompting lawmakers to try to restrict arms deals - a move that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.

In Europe: Germany, Israel's closest ally since World War II, called the Gaza strikes "irrational," while France and Britain threatened sanctions and Spain, Ireland and Slovenia officially recognized the state of Palestine.

In Latin America: Bolivia severed diplomatic relations completely, Colombia and Chile recalled their ambassadors, and Mexico followed suit by opening a Palestinian embassy in Ramallah - a move that shook up the balance of diplomacy in the Western Hemisphere.

Russia and China: Moscow described the war as "an American license to kill Palestinians," while Beijing offered a three-phase initiative that included a ceasefire, aid, and the revival of a two-state solution, cementing their role as international players competing with the West.

Regionally: Egypt drew a "red line" to prevent the displacement of Palestinians to the Sinai, while Erdogan launched a fiery attack saying that "Netanyahu surpassed Hitler in his brutality."

The result: For the first time in decades, Israel is losing its diplomatic immunity in the West and facing isolation in the Global South, while new political maps are forming that could change the nature of the international system for years to come.
